Among the primary uses of CBD, the relief of stress and anxiety are among the reasons why we are using Cannabidiol more and more in Europe. Numerous studies on the subject exist, discover them in our article:
What is stress?
Stress is a normal phenomenon: it is what happens in our body and mind when we are subjected to pressure or aggression from our environment: work, conflict, noise, constraints, physical or psychological pressure, fear, etc. According to some surveys, stress affects nearly 9 out of 10 european people: it is called the ‘illness’ of the 21st century.
Symptoms can be numerous: muscle aches, headaches, dizziness, nausea, fatigue and sleep problems, among others.
What is anxiety?
Anxiety, on the other hand, refers to the tendency of every human being to anticipate and magnify difficulties. Anxiety, in a way, is the ability to amplify or create stress oneself. You can consider yourself stressed if your symptoms of physical or mental tension disappear at a distance from worries (in the evening, at the weekend, on holiday). You are anxious if these symptoms persist even far away from problems. Anxiety disorders affect nearly 20 to 30% of european people during their lifetime.
To cope with stress and anxiety, many natural o non-natural medicines. Some of them seem to be effective but can cause harmful side effects. Among the natural solutions offered by nature, hemp and particularly the CBD extracted from it seems to be a promising alternative.
What studies exist on the use of CBD for stress relief?
CBD is a 5-HT1A receptors agonist.
They are well-known receptors because they belong to the family of serotonin receptors, known as the ‘happiness hormone’, which has been studied by Spanish scientists: you can find out more about this study by clicking on this link. In this study, it was proved that CBD have the capacity to increase the transmission activity of this receptor, thus increasing the availability of serotonin in the synaptic space.
The rapid onset of CBD’s antidepressant action and the simultaneous anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effect would resolve some of the main limitations of current antidepressant treatments.
CBD makes it possible to regenerate the neurons of the hippocampus.
The hippocampus is a very important region of the brain because it regulates the brain’s functions: brain scans of people who may be affected by stress show it to be smaller than others. It therefore plays a key role in stress management. In this animal study, which you can discover by clicking here, CBD has been highlighted for its action of neurogenesis of the hippocampus: it allows the regeneration of its neurons, the ultimate objective of anti-stress treatment.
CBD helps to reduce panic disorders
This study, summarised in video and published at the end of 2009, highlighted the action of CBD on mammals thanks to its antioxidant properties: mice were able to reduce their fear of predators thanks to the administration of CBD:
Available studies on the action of the CBD against anxiety.
In this study, published in 2011, Brazilian scientists have highlighted the action of CBD on social anxiety thanks to its anxiolytic properties, which is beginning to be studied more and more: CBD has reduced this disorder by acting on the limbic areas.
In 2016, Spanish researchers also studied the action of Cannabidiol on the management of anxiety disorders: the results showed that CBD offers rapid antidepressant effects. A study, carried out a year earlier, concluded on the effectiveness of CBD in reducing anxiety disorders that can have multiple origins, such as post-traumatic stress disorder.
